Many of us are experiencing varying levels of fear and overwhelm during this time of uncertainty regarding the Corona Virus, which is of course normal feelings to have in a time like this. Fear can pop up when we don’t feel in control of a situation and in this case there are a lot of unknowns not only about the virus itself but how our lives will be affected, the lives of our loved ones, people we know, people we don’t know and just our day to day.

The other factor to acknowledge here is the rapid rate of change that is occurring. Each day seems that things are different than the last and lots of change also brings on lots of fear. How we make ourselves feel safe and grounded is being very challenged right now.

In this episode I’m talking with the amazing Julia Fried who is a mindfulness & meditation teacher as well as a hypnotherapist and a new mom. She has some great tools and tips for us we can apply to our day-to-day to help us through this time.

According to the Oxford Dictionary :

“Mindfulness is the quality or state of being consciously aware of something. A mental state achieved by focusing ones awareness on the present moment while calmly acknowledging and accepting ones feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations used as a therapeutic technique”.

How to begin a mindfulness practice as discussed in this episode:

  1. Practice presence for only a few minutes at a time
  2. Scan the body from head-to-toe by noticing how each body part feels and then relaxing it.

How to work with Fear:

  1. Notice where the fear might be happening in your body. Where do you physically feel it?
  2. Make more observations about the fear as if it had characteristics. What kind of characteristics does it have? (i.e what color is it, does it speak a language, what does it want to tell me, is it being tricky or unreasonable, what shape is it)
  3. Then imagine this “fear” outside of your body so you can see it and give yourself permission to change these characteristics to things you’d like. (i.e if the fear is red maybe it is now yellow, if it has sharp edges and is big, maybe it becomes soft and very small)
  4. Then put it back in your body to see how it feels after you changed it. To realize you have the power to control it.
