The American Diet Today

The American diet is not getting healthier - it’s getting unhealthier. The average daily calorie count that the “normal” American eats has increased from 2000 calories in 1970 to 2500 calories in 2019. It is not surprising as the 2018 level of meat, eggs, nuts, and grains was higher than the USDA’s 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans published in 2019.

This podcast walks through the USDA’s 2021estimates as to what food companies and farmers produce in different food areas. Things like meat, poultry, and seafood; cheese, ice cream and yogurt; added sugars, and fruits and vegetables. Lots of interesting information.

Let me know in the comments how you eat and what you think healthy eating means.
