In this week’s episode, we welcome Lee Reitelman, an
entrepreneur working at the intersection of health and
sustainability and CEO and co-founder of PlantPaper, a tree-free,
toxin-free toilet paper company.
PlantPaper was founded to radically change our current toilet
paper industry and hygienic practices.
Currently, 27,000 trees per day are flushed down the world’s
toilet, and over a gallon of bleach, formaldehyde, and other
chemicals are included per roll.
The toilet paper at PlantPaper is made of FSC Certified
organically grown bamboo pulp with absolutely zero chlorine or
formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals. Being one of the world’s
fastest-growing plants and capable of growing up to three feet in
24 hours, bamboo is an ideal alternative for the production of
environmentally-friendly toilet paper. Bamboo requires very little
water, and no fertilizer, and regenerates on its own after cutting.
In fact, the more regularly bamboo is harvested, the faster it
grows.
Lee is a long-time educator, a graduate of Princeton
University, and is also the co-author of the Greenhouse Cookbook: a
Guide to Recreational Juicing, a best-selling book of plant-based
recipes.
