Let's Be Real: Mama Journeys

Nov 11, 2024

Kristin Goodwin is an amazing badass! She was a pilot as a Brigadier General and served over 30 years in the Air Force. As a woman, graduating from the Air Force Academy and doing flight school at 21, she decided she needed to think ahead to the family she wanted to have. At the age of 25, she wasn't living her authentic life and came to terms with being gay and what that meant to be in the military under Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT).  She put her dreams of having a family on hold for 13 years until DADT was repealed.  She was so excited to start a family, she rushed into a relationship to have all the things she wanted…being a mom!  She had a lot of struggles as a new mom, working for a 4 star general as a new mom being one of them! The pressures were HUGE, the postpartum was rough and she struggled with the emotions of motherhood, unsupportive spouse AND the 12-14 hour days at work. She wanted to be true to herself but couldn’t really do that with her job and SHOULD have taken the help but didn’t feel like she could (for many reasons).  As a new mom, her biggest supporters were her mom and step-dad who ended up staying through the COVID pandemic to help and that was a Godsend. Her best mama moments come so often but finding out she was pregnant with her second daughter was so special since she had to use IVF for that pregnancy.  Her worst mama moment was in the delivery of her first baby girl. She counted 16 people in the room and realized she might lose her daughter and that was life changing. She LOVED being pregnant and was glowing and after doing an Iron Man triathlon, and being in amazing shape (and still is!), she thought she could do a natural labor and she labored for over 13 hours because her daughter got stuck. She actually had her second daughter 2 years and 1 day later and she came out in minutes!  She actually had 2 babies who were exactly the same weight and length!  She said she was pretty naive and thought labor was going to be a bit painful but HOLY MOLY it’s way harder than she thought it would be. She also wishes she would have realized that her body would never be the same. Like EVER. She wants moms to know that they are not alone!  Kristin and her wife, Dr. Traci have a coaching business called Delta-V. They can be found at thedelta-v.com where they help with one-on-one coaching, executive team building and leadership development. Check them out, because they are truly two of the most amazing badass women you will ever meet.
