Using technology to bring people together for a large conference or even a small meeting can be complicated. Today, people expect professional productions whether the speakers and attendees are onsite, offsite, or both. But combining an array of technologies, platforms, and digital assets to provide glitch-free events can be tricky. And stressful.

Jeff Bellomo’s guest, Steve Kownacki, is dedicated to eliminating that stress for his clients. With a warehouse full of equipment, an expert crew, and decades of experience, Steve’s company, Final Focus Productions, provides audio/visual (A/V) services for events of all types and sizes.

Key Takeaways

  • Has provided A/V services for the Bellomo team

(06:40) – Becoming an A/V specialist

  • Learned audio engineering and went to work for Channel 27 in Harrisburg
  • The TV station provided an opportunity to learn cameras and filming in addition to sound
  • Moved into corporate scripted video production
  • Started his own company in 1991
  • His reputation was so good that past clients moved their projects to his company
  • Type of projects widened to include interviews, reality-based work, sizzle reels, etc.
  • Eventually became a full-service A/V provider

(09:34) – Navigating the pandemic

  • When the pandemic hit, all traditional in-person event work cancelled
  • Suddenly, everyone had a need for remote recording and streaming
  • Virtual events became the norm
  • Steve works to ensure all attendees have a good experience

(10:44) – The scale and type of events vary

  • Events can be in-person, virtual, or a hybrid
  • Just wrapped a large event of about 1,000 attendees
  • Responsible for A/V in the main meeting hall (which required three 20-foot projection screens and all sound and lighting) plus A/V for eight concurrent breakout rooms
  • Considers meetings of 500-800 attendees to be his sweet spot

(13:44) – Clients, attendees, and connections

  • Relies mostly on referrals and repeat business
  • Planning, contingencies, and testing onsite prior to an event are key to a successful production
