SEEing to Lead

She has written and presented for multiple state and local education organizations, and has provided professional development to various districts in the areas of school climate, personnel, and instructional leadership. She is an instructor in educational administration at Miami University of Ohio. Dr. Schwanke currently serves as a Deputy Superintendent in Ohio.

Key Takeaways:

Effective leadership is at the center of a Venn Diagram between courage and responsiveness.

Leadership is something you get better at over time and through experience, but there is an innate component that some people have causing them to initially step forward.

Organizations require a variety of leadership styles if they are going to work well.

Leaders need to be open, honest, and clear about expectations  so that people can be comfortable and the best version of themselves.

All leaders need to learn how to be good followers and aspiring leaders need to make sure they find someone to follow and learn from to be their most effective selves.

Stepping up into a leadership position is about finding where your skills and talents match a need.

People will not be interested in leading unless they find value in it. It's not about competence, but instead confidence.

We would never step into positions of greater responsibility and accountability if we waited until we were ready. You should step in before you're ready because the fact that you're wondering if you can means that you are. The only reason you pause is because you aren't sure of yourself and need a little boost of confidence.

Teaching viewed as a tree analogy when looking to support teachers.

We need to focus on what people bring as strength rather than their weaknesses so that we understand their value to the overall team.

Don't be a hammer looking for nails.
