SuAnne Big Crow was a high school basketball star from the Pine Ridge, South Dakota reservation. SuAnne played in the 90s and by the time she was 14 she had become one of South Dakota’s best basketball players and led her high school to become the first ever Native American State Champions. But SuAnne wasn’t just an athlete, by age 17, her social activism had made her a household name across the Great Plains. SuAnne died in a car accident while still in high school but her pride continues to inspire the Lakota people 30 years later. In this week’s episode Sasha talks with filmmaker Kris Kaczor about the challenges of making the film, his own connection to the subject, and SuAnne’s lasting legacy.
