Michael Casey, who resigned from the State Department in July in protest of the Biden Administration’s policies in Gaza, spoke out publicly for the first time this week. After 15 years, Casey resigned because his humanitarian recommendations for Gaza were completely ignored by the department, while Israel’s demands were always met. Part of his work in the weeks after October 7th, 2023, was to document the number of Palestinian deaths. Three weeks into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, Casey had reported that at least 7,000 Palestinians had been killed. When a reporter asked President Biden about the number, he replied “I have no notion that the Palestinians are telling the truth about how many people are killed.” In another instance, Casey’s team had produced a report detailing what should be done for the future of Gaza. Casey said the State Department ignored his report and informed him that they were going to move forward with Israel’s plan, which Casey believes was only designed to create chaos in Gaza and therefore a justification for Israel to annex it. Casey said, “We don’t have a policy on Palestine. We just do what the Israelis want us to do.”
