Mel Bee became interested in nutrition after she overcame bulimia and depression in her early twenties. When she transitioned to a plant-based lifestyle she realized just how much food can contribute both to disease, and to wellbeing. After a decade of research into detoxing and holistic plant-based nutrition, she’s on a mission to spread the word. Leaving behind her 9 to 5, Mel got into freelance writing and set off traveling in an old VW campervan—with some funny tales to tell! As a detox coach, she helps women step into vibrant health by detoxing their cupboards and their minds from junk foods and junk thoughts.

Speaking of rubbish foods, did you know that over 75% of “edible” products in supermarkets are considered “non-food” items – yep, they’re THAT processed. The situation seems better in Europe, but even there, junk foods and associated diseases like diabetes are on the rise. The dire food situation seems to be matched by the scary political and environmental issues we’re facing.

So how do we deal with it? We send out love. That’s the only energy powerful enough to bring about positive change in the face of so much darkness. We’re not powerless. Each of us can choose to make every decision with love –be it the food we eat, the brands we buy, the way we behave towards others. We can make a difference every day. For Mel, this is how we create a greener, fairer, happier world.

Our guest today is vegan eco-entrepreneur Charlie Fyffe, founder of Charlie’s Brownies, an organic, ethical company that makes dairy-free, refined-sugar-free, gluten-free brownies Discover how Charlie followed his dreams, and how he helps others do the same.

Our guest today has been an entrepreneur since his early teens. Always a wheeler-dealer, Charlie Fyffe would sell Gatorade and give car rides in high school to make extra money. Having always loved brownies, selling them seemed a natural progression, and Charlies Brownies was born. But seeing that some people couldn’t enjoy the brownies made Charlie want to create a product that was not only delicious, but healthy and ethical as well. Charlie’s Brownies now makes organic, gluten-free, refined-sugar-free, vegan cupcakes (and we tasted them – they will blow you away). Charlie’s even working on a lower GI version for diabetics. And what about “special” brownies? You’ll have to listen to the episode for our take on that!

But Charlie does more than simply make amazing cakes. He also helps to revitalize the health and eating habits of underserved communities. This can be incredibly challenging in communities where there are no health food shop and where the nicest building houses a fast food restaurant. But Charlie is undeterred—there are ways to be plant-based on a budget. Charlie also gives talks about entrepreneurship, to encourage young people to follow their dreams: there is an alternative to the dead-end job option!

Food is everything for Charlie, he loves to teach people how what they eat and what they invest in affects them, their communities, the farmers and the earth. We have a choice every time we eat: we need to invest in food that is renewable, sustainable, and socially responsible. Food that supports the planet and conserves the earth for future generations: Plant-based food.

You can make big changes every day, through the food you choose to buy and eat. And for Charlie, this sustainable way of life can be delicious.

Come and check out Charlie’s Brownies at the LA Vegan Street Fair on 26th March where he’ll be launching three new mystery products!

You can buy Charlie’s Brownies in Yoga Urt in Glendale or if you want to order send Charlie a message.

People go vegan for different reasons. Some of us are drawn to a plant-based diet because of the health implications, some of us can’t stand the thought of the cruelty of industrial farming. Jessica was inspired to go vegan after a trip to Sea World. Realizing just how unhappy the dolphins were, Jessica knew she had to change her lifestyle.

Tired of being sent to steak houses by the vegan apps she was using, Jessica began designing her own. When she saw how many vegan restaurants there were in LA, she had a brain wave: to gather them all together in a street fair and spread the vegan love to as many people as possible. Jessica’s mission is to plant a seed, and create more vegans by making plant-based food affordable and accessible.

The Vegan Street Fair is in its 3rd year and this year will be bigger than ever—the best thing? It’s free, family friendly, and a fantastic way for you to try bite-sized portions of many different vegan delicacies.

It can be tough to navigate our crazy world in a healthy and holistic way. Here are some of Jessica’s tips for doing it with grace:
•    Do what you can – progress over perfection.
•    Find a community of like-minded people, who are on the same journey.
•    Be ok with screwing up – don’t try to be perfect.
•    Don’t want to give up cheese? Check out Miyokos and Yvonne’s Vegan Kitchen for the best vegan alternatives.
•    Check out Vegan Street Fair!

LA’s Vegan Street Fair takes place on 26th March between 11am and 7pm. AND there’s a beer garden! For only $40 you can get a VIP pass, which gets you front of line access to hundreds of vegan stalls. Join us!

Our first question is from Linda, who wants to know which green powders we recommend, and how to choose a high quality brand.
Soils are over-farmed and the resulting fruits and vegetables don’t contain as many nutrients as they once did. Which means that, even if you eat a rainbow every day, you still need to supplement some essential nutrients. We would recommend Vitaforce. The founder and owner of the brand actually created this powder to heal her own body. Allison has been using it for years; it contains all the greens, vitamins and minerals you need, and it doesn’t taste like garbage.

Our second question comes from Belle and was posted in our Facebook Group. Belle wants to know our thoughts on CBD. Is it a fad, or a healing tool?
Suzy is involved in the green revolution currently occurring in California—CBD is definitely not a fad! CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive component of hemp, and it is very healing. CBD interacts with our own cannabidiol receptors and helps with pain management, insomnia, anxiety, Alzheimer’s and tumor reduction, among other things. It also packs a more powerful antioxidant punch than Vitamin C! For the science behind the claims, check out www.projectcbd.org. CBD is completely nontoxic and non-addictive. But as with every product, some brands are better than others—choose one that uses high doses of high quality CBD extract.

Unfortunately, the government has now got a patent on CBD, despite the fact this is a completely natural substance. What’s more, the DEA has classified it as a Category 1 controlled substance, despite the fact it will not get you high. But there is a growing movement towards acceptance of this healing plant. An increasing number of studies show the therapeutic benefits of both CBD and THC, and more than half the country’s states have legalized the medical use of marijuana. Want more info, reach out to Suzy on out FB group!

Finally, our third question comes from Sabrina. She wants to know why teeth become prone to cavities, and what we can do about it.
This is a topic we’re incredibly passionate about. Some dentists just drill for the sake of it, even when there are no cavities. But even when cavities ARE present, you don’t necessarily need to get a filling. When you break a bone, your body heals itself. Bones can regenerate, and while teeth are a little different to bone, they’re very similar. According to Dr. Robert Nara, your teeth can heal themselves, all you need to do is use the right tools. If you have enough calcium and magnesium in your diet and in your saliva, you can heal your teeth. Check out Dr. Nara’s book How to be Dentally Self Sufficient. Suzy’s favorite tooth-care tool is baking-soda tooth powder, because it alkalizes your mouth and helps keep your mouth super clean. But she’s got a few other tips too!
