We are 70% water. If the water we drink is toxic, of course our health suffers! The average tap water contains a cocktail of chemicals: pesticides, plastics, chlorine and fluoride, to name but a few. Today’s guest, Travis Chappell, is at the forefront of a movement for clean, pure, healthy water.

Travis was always pretty active, playing several hours of basketball every day when he was in college. But when he started doing door-to-door sales, his health deteriorated. He gained 40 pounds, and was constantly suffering with aches, pains, and various health issues. And one day, he couldn’t fit into 38-inch trousers—he knew something had to change. That’s when he bought a water filtration system, and started drinking a gallon a day and going to the gym. Eighteen months later, he’d lost 60 pounds and 6 inches off his waist. Water changed the way Travis thought about health, and now he’s on a mission to help others transform their wellbeing through the water they drink.

There’s a direct correlation between water and health. Our modern diets are acidic, even the air we breathe is acidic. The body produces fat cells to neutralize the acidity that it simply isn’t equipped to deal with. It also stores toxins from water, food and environment in our adipose (fat) tissue. Result: weight gain. But when you drink filtered, alkaline water, you change your body’s pH and help it to detox, which means it doesn’t need to produce extra fat cells, and you naturally lose weight. What’s more, alkaline water contains a higher number of negative ions—powerful antioxidants that fight free radicals and keep you younger.

Now you might be thinking, “Well, this doesn’t apply to me, I buy bottled water.” But what about the water you cook with, the water you shower in? The crazy thing is that in a 10-minute shower, you absorb the same amount of chemicals that you would if you were to drink 8 glasses of that water! And it’s actually worse, because when you drink water, your kidneys and liver have a chance to filter out some of the toxins. When it’s absorbed through your skin, all those chemicals go directly into your bloodstream.

So, what’s the answer? The first step is to get your water checked to find out exactly what you’re dealing with. Travis’s company Revive Water carries out water testing, and specializes in designing water systems tailored to your unique needs. And if you’re renting, no worries—you can take the system with you when you move! Click here for more info!

Travis is also a dear friend and fellow podcaster. He was inspired by John Lee Dumas to start his own podcast about something he’s super passionate about: networking. If you want to be successful, you need to surround yourself with successful people. And if you want to become an entrepreneur and wave goodbye that that office cubicle, then you need to reach out to like-minded people, to your network. A great place to start learning how to do just that is Travis’s podcast, Build Your Network. We think it’s a fantastic resource for anyone thinking of starting their own business, so check it out!

Food is fundamental to health—it is the primary thing that makes us sick or well. And that’s also true for our brain! Yes, that’s right, food heals—the body and the mind! Today’s guest totally gets that. While most doctors simply don’t care about nutrition, Dr. Masley is one of the rare MD’s to take it seriously. Right from the start, he knew that if he wanted to make a real difference to his patients’ lives, he needed to do more than simply tell them how many grams of fat or fiber to eat: he had to share recipes that are delicious, easy to prepare, and that nourish the heart, brain and soul. He’s our kind of M.D.!

Dr. Masley is a physician, nutritionist, chef and creator of the number 1 health program 30 Days to a Younger Heart. He’s also authored the books 10 Years Younger, 30 Day Heart Tune-Up, and The Better Brain Solution. His goal is to help people improve their brain health, reduce cognitive decline, and feel better than ever.

Having witnessed the devastating impact of memory loss on his family, Dr. Masley is on a mission to stop it from affecting more people. His latest book, The Better Brain Solution, shares lifestyle strategies that are proven to make your brain younger, sharper, quicker and more productive.

Here are some of Dr. Masley’s brain-boosting tips:

  • FOOD
    • Make sure you add these foods to your diet:
      • Plant pigments: Colorful fruits and vegetables (like blueberries, leafy greens, beetroot, etc.), cacao, matcha green tea, organic coffee (in moderation – 2 cups a day), and red wine (also in moderation!).
      • Smart fats: If you’re on a low-fat diet, stop! Your brain is made up of 60% fat, so you need smart fats to keep it functioning at its best. Good sources include nuts, seeds, olive oil, and avocados. Also take an omega 3 DHA supplement.
      • Herbs and spices: These are packed with anti-inflammatories and anti-oxidants which fight free radicals and keep your brain young. The best combinations are Italian herbs (like rosemary, basil, oregano, etc.) and curry spices (like turmeric, cumin, fenugreek, etc.).
      • Probiotics: Your gut is your second brain. Most of the neurotransmitters needed for proper cognitive function are made in your digestive system, so keep it healthy by including gut-friendly foods like miso, sauerkraut, and kombucha.
    • Avoid the following foods:
      • Refined carbohydrates (sugar, flour): These carbs hike up your blood sugar and are the number one cause of memory loss!
      • Nitrosamines: These are preservatives used in processed meats like bacon, hot dogs, sausages, etc. They are neurotoxic, and increase your risk of cancer and diabetes.
      • Tuna and large fish: They’re high in mercury, which is toxic to our brains!
  • FITNESS
    • Physical exercise: Both aerobic exercise and strength training are essential to keep your brain young.
    • Mental exercise: Never stop learning! Gaining new skills, taking classes and feeding your brain with knowledge creates more neural connections and improves your brain speed.
  • STRESS
    • Stress actually shrinks your brain! When you’re stressed, your cortisol levels go up, and this raises your blood sugar which increases your risk of artery plaque and heart disease. Take some time out every day to meditate, make sure you get proper sleep, and do something that makes you feel good. Romance and sex are good for both your heart and your brain!

Doing all of these things not only boosts your brain but also even prevents Alzheimer’s disease – the sixth leading cause of death in the United States

If you want to improve your cognitive health, there’s no better place to start than Dr. Masley’s brain quiz. It only takes 90 seconds, and you’ll get his Better Brain Solution Shopping List! Don’t wait until you have symptoms: take action today to protect your brain, prevent Alzheimer’s and keep it fit and healthy for years to come.

There are over 77,000 manmade chemicals in the environment right now. The average woman wears 26-28 cancer causing chemicals, just from cosmetics. We’re facing an onslaught of toxins every single day and this doesn’t just affect your overall health. It also causes weight gain because the body stores toxins in adipose (fat) tissue.

If you want to lose weight and improve your health, detoxing is the number one thing you can do. But with so much conflicting advice, it can be hard to know where to start.

Wherever we are, emotionally, health-wise, we are the sum of all our actions up to this point. Symptoms like irritability, low mood, fatigue, joint pain, low libido, not loving life, are simply a result of a lifestyle too full of components that stress our body. In the new year, we all focus on adding things in: more exercise, more supplements, more green juice. But we can also shift the focus on to what we can take away as well: slow down and begin removing some of the things that are dragging our health down.

Dr. Stephen Cabral is a naturopathic doctor specializing in both functional and Ayurvedic medicine. He developed his passion for health & wellness after going through severe health complications at the age of 17. He saw over 50 different doctors, tried over 100 different treatment protocols, but still saw no hope of recovery.

It wasn’t until he met an alternative health doctor whom explained to him how he got here and how he could become well again, that he began his recovery process. It was at this young age that he knew his life would be dedicated to helping others rebalance their bodies and renew their health.

Today, Dr. Cabral uses the best of ancient healing combined with state of the art functional medicine testing (blood tests, stool tests, biomarkers, etc) to give his patients a full spectrum view of what is going on in their body and the tools to rebalance their health. Dr. Cabral’s mission is to spread what he’s learned through his studies in India, China, Sri Lanka, Europe and the US to help people return to a state of energy, vitality, and happiness.

He’s authored the best-selling book The Rain Barrel Effect, and hosts the podcast The Cabral Concept. If you have any health questions, he’s probably already answered it—we’re completely addicted to his show!

Dr. Cabral’s tips for sustainable changes you can make today to help your body cleanse, detox and heal:

  • Fast for at least 12 hours a day. If you’re constantly putting things into your digestive tract, it doesn’t have time to “catch up” and filter out the bad stuff so instead it is stored. When you fast, you allow your system to go into autophagy, a process whereby your body kills cancer cells, releases toxins, rejuvenates and repairs itself!
  • Crowd out the bad foods. Make 60-80% of your diet fresh produce.
  • Sauna (infrared or traditional)
  • Epsom salt baths
  • Dry body brushing in the morning
  • Banish stress from your life

If you want to kick-start your health with a detox, check out Dr. Cabral’s 21-day detox plan, which combines the best of ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with the best modern medical knowledge. You can transform a lot in 21 days: reduce inflammation, balance blood sugar and hormones, increase your energy, vitality, and libido. This 21-day plan is the next best thing to actually working with Dr. Cabral. We’ve tried it and LOVE it!

Affectionately known as Mary Poppins for the new millennium, Gorgeously Green’s Sophie Uliano is a New York Times bestselling author passionate about helping people live life in a more holistic way (check out her previous episode 178).

And you know our other two guests from episodes 112, 151 and 179, Joy and Jay the Jing Slingers, superfood organic chefs, experts in anti-aging, longevity and tonic herbalism, and authors of the Food with Benefits recipe book. They’ve cracked the code to create culinary masterpieces packed with health-boosting superfoods and tonic herbs. We couldn’t think of anyone better to start the year with!

Let’s set those New Year intentions! How can we feel more empowered, more gorgeous, and healthier than ever?

First tip: resolutions are out! New year’s resolutions simply don’t work. In fact, over 90% fail. Why? One reason is because when we set ourselves rigid goals, we set ourselves up to not carry them through long term, and this leads to feelings of shame, blame and judgement. The underlying emotion is: I’m not good enough. And that feeling makes positive change almost impossible, and keeps you feeling like a failure. So much for a “happy” new year!

We all want change because we think it’s going to make us happier. It might be losing weight, getting a new job, buying a bigger house, getting married. But that’s the lie. Because happiness doesn’t come from external factors. Happiness comes within. If you can be happy by being grateful with what you have right now, you’re vibrating at a higher energy, and that’s when beautiful things happen.

So why not ditch the new year’s resolutions, and have a new year’s evolution instead? Evolve to be more at home and comfortable in your own skin, be more present, and be there for those who matter in your life. Here are our New Year VIP Health Panel’s tips on making your 2018 happier and healthier than ever!

• Take baby steps—otherwise you won’t keep it up long term. Make small manageable goals that are sustainable.
• Return to the present—when you’re present, time becomes more malleable. It’s not about the coming year: it’s about the now.
• Change the way your talk to yourself. Set intentions in a gentle way and trust in the flow of the Universe.
• Have a rampage of gratitude. Wake up and be grateful for your pillow, the roof over your head, the comfort of your body… If you start your day with gratitude, you open your heart to see the beauty all around you.
• Open yourself to guidance. The Universe will steer you to the right path.
• Expand your perspective to get yourself out of the ego state that locks you into your mind.
• Be willing to take what you want—there’s no need for shame.
• Be grounded in the present—what’s going on with you right now? Journaling can help you work out what you’re feeling, and let go of difficult emotions.
• Realize that the ups and downs are all part of the experience of life, and part of being human. Experiencing the darker emotions helps you to appreciate the lighter ones.
• Allow yourself to feel the whole range of your emotions. Even depression can lead you to something better.

Tips to release weight in a healthy way:
• Know where your weight came from.
• Be really clear about why you want to lose weight and where you want to be.
• Get to know your body, it will help you work out the best diet for your unique needs.
• Weight-loss is a metabolic and hormonal response—you need to take a long-term sustainable approach. Crash diets don’t work. It’s about quality of food and nutrients.
• Exercise is a huge component of health—strength training can turn your body into a fat burning machine. Challenge yourself to do something you couldn’t easily do last week, or change it up and do something completely different.
• Focus on a whole food plant-based diet.
