Current medical wisdom advises that anyone suffering from diabetes or prediabetes should eat a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. But today’s guests, Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH, rely on a century of research to show that advice is misguided. While it may improve short-term blood glucose control, such a diet also increases the long-term risk for chronic diseases like cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic kidney disease, and fatty liver disease.
The revolutionary solution is to eat a low-fat plant-based whole-food diet, the most powerful way to reverse insulin resistance in all types of diabetes: type 1, type 1.5, type 2, prediabetes, and gestational diabetes.
This is why Cyrus and Robby founded Mastering Diabetes, an online platform that helps people Reverse Insulin Resistance Permanently, Get your best A1c, achieve your ideal body weight, and lower your cholesterol in as little as 3 months through their summits, coaching, and books. Their brand new book, Mastering Diabetes is out now.
As the creators of the extraordinary and effective Mastering Diabetes Method, Cyrus and Robby lay out a step-by-step plan proven to reverse insulin resistance-the root cause of blood glucose variability- while improving overall health and maximizing life expectancy. Armed with more than 800 scientific references and drawing on more than 36 years of personal experience living with type 1 diabetes themselves, the authors show how to eat large quantities of carbohydrate-rich whole foods like bananas, potatoes, and quinoa while decreasing blood glucose, oral medication, and insulin requirements.
They also provide life-changing advice on intermittent fasting and daily exercise and offer tips on eating in tricky situations, such as restaurant meals and family dinners. Perhaps best of all: On the Mastering Diabetes Method, you will never go hungry.
With more than 30 delicious, filling, and nutrient-dense recipes and backed by cutting-edge nutritional science, Mastering Diabetes will help you maximize your insulin sensitivity, attain your ideal body weight, improve your digestive health, gain energy, live an active life, and feel the best you've felt in years.
Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!
Did you know that since the war on cancer was declared by Nixon, cancer rates have increased from 1 in 21 people to 1 in 2.5? Clearly, our modern approach just isn’t working. To make matters worse, now even children are being diagnosed with cancer. It was these insane statistics that spurred Dr. Kevin Conners to open his clinic. He’s been practicing functional medicine since the 80’s (way before it was ever trendy!). And he has a different approach to traditional medicine: he focuses on treating the cause of cancer, rather than the cancer itself.
Cancer is multi-factorial. You can’t point to one single thing and say “this is what caused your cancer”. You can’t even really just point to genetics, because only around 5% of cancers are due to certain genes. Cancer comes from a combination of issues: diet, nutrition, environment, emotions. These are the epigenetic factors involved - these are the things that change the expression of your genes, and will then either trigger or protect you from cancer and other diseases.
And this is why there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Everyone is different, so cancer, ultimately, needs to be treated as such. After all, one person might do great on a raw food diet, while another may not have the digestive enzymes to cope with that. Instead of applying a standard treatment, Dr. Conners treats every single patient as an individual. That’s where functional testing comes in, because it helps you work out exactly what’s stressing your immune responses, and determines any food allergies, intolerances, deficiencies, which in turn helps you create the perfect anti-disease diet for you.
Dr. Conners also works with people with autoimmune conditions and Lyme’s disease. Just like cancer, these are multifactorial. And they’re on the rise. It’s not so much a case of if you get autoimmune, but rather which autoimmune condition will you get. We are constantly damaging our gut walls, which makes us vulnerable to these conditions. Even if you eat organic, we’re exposed to many chemicals that damage our digestive system. And that’s without mentioning another big topic: vaccination, which can damage the brain, increase inflammation, and lead to autoimmune disorders.
So what can you do to protect yourself from cancer and autoimmune conditions? Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as drinking green juice, you have to go deeper.

There is a common theme that happens at the beginning of every new year: We set resolutions and intentions to work out more, to lose weight, to eat better, and to get healthier. But unfortunately, even with our best of intentions the research shows that usually by February most people have fallen back into their old habits and forgotten their resolutions, or decided that whatever diet or exercise plan they chose to follow just didn't work.
Very often we are not getting to the root cause of the original problem and so we are doing the surface level things (that in theory should work) but because these are temporary fixes or bandaid approaches, they are not lasting and sustainable lifestyle changes. So we are not actually dealing with the issues that got our bodies to be sick or tired or overweight in the first place.
To create sustainable lifestyle changes we can take a mind body, and spirit approach to maintaining a healthy weight. On this episode of Food Heals, you’ll hear some of our most inspiring weight loss stories chosen from almost 300 podcast interviews to help keep you motivated over the month of February.

Nicole Davidsohn is the cofounder and herbalist at Eva, a unique self-care company that uses organic superfoods and hemp flowers to give people a better quality of life.
When Nicole was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, she thought things couldn’t get much worse.
Enter: Traumatic Brain Injury.
Months of pain and pills, fatigue and struggle, Nicole was ready to give up.
Until she discovered the plant that would play a critical role in her journey back to health.
Enter: Hemp.
The raw cannabis juice from hemp began to give Nicole her life back and she and her partner, Dane soon discovered a way to preserve the raw plant in its raw form while retaining 99% of all vitamins, minerals, cannabinoids, terpenes, and more.
In October 2016, Nicole’s dog Mary Jane was diagnosed with Lymphoma, a form of canine cancer, and given 90 days to live. Nicole and Dane decided to skip the expensive chemotherapy treatments, and began feeding Mary the raw cannabis juice. She immediately responded with energy and a decrease in symptoms.
With high hopes, they continued the holistic treatment, giving her an additional 33 months of a happy, healthy doggy life. She was chasing geese 3 days before she passed away from old age, at 15.
Nicole continues to educate people on the benefits of eating raw cannabis flowers, buds, and juice through her company Eva. Eva is the first company known worldwide to do the first ever nutrition test on Cannabis Flowers. They also recently launched a line of Hemp Seasonings that contain 2000mg of their proprietary Flower Powder™.
These seasonings allow people to see cannabis as another vegetable/ herb, something to eat daily for nutrition. Eva is pairing up with chefs, restaurants, and grocery stores to supply hemp flowers as another food, similar to hemp seeds and hemp oil already found within stores. Following the premature death of his mother from breast cancer, Dr. Platt began the journey of assimilating his knowledge about hormones and the importance of keeping them in balance for optimum health and wellness.
Through the observation of thousands of patients, he uncovered secrets to the body’s master system, namely hormones. In 1995, he opened a clinic in Palm Desert, California where he has been consulting with his patients and clients employing his Platt Protocol, a natural approach to hormone balance and wellness.
Since 1997, the Platt Wellness Center has been a pioneer in the research and advancement of the therapeutic use of progesterone cream and other bio-identical hormones. Platt is considered an important pioneer in observational, functional, alternative, and allopathic medicine focused on bio-identical hormones and adrenaline overload.
His award-winning books, “The Miracle of Bio-Identical Hormones”, How I Lost My...fatigue, hot flashes, ADHD, ADD, fibromyalgia, PMS, osteoporosis, weight, sexual dysfunction, anger, migraines… and “Adrenaline Dominance, A Revolutionary Approach to Wellness”, detail his Platt Protocol: solutions for conditions modern medicine considers ‘incurable’ and that are ‘treated’ with drugs, endless office visits and tests as well as billions spent on research.
He has identified many conditions that respond positively to bio-identical hormones, especially progesterone. Conditions that affect millions of people worldwide such as: ADHD, fibromyalgia, autism, depression, bipolar disorder, addictions, weight gain, anger, road rage, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and more.
In 2012, JJ Virgin was in a hospital room next to her sixteen-year-old son who was struck by a hit-and-run driver and left for dead. She was told by doctors that he wouldn’t last through the night and to let him go.
With every reason to give up, JJ chose instead to invest her energy into the hope that her son would not just survive, but thrive.
In the latest episode of Food Heals, she shares the journey of overcoming the worst moment of her life.
It’s a story of western medicine and holistic healing modalities working together to heal a young man and a mom that wouldn’t take no for an answer.
During this difficult time, JJ learned valuable personal lessons that helped her rebuild her life and find success and purpose in herself, her work, and teach her sons and community how to face their own obstacles and trials.
JJ believes that inside every mother is a fierce, resilient, intuitive woman who has the ability to tap into an indomitable mindset and create heroic outcomes—for her children, her family, her community and for herself—she is a Warrior Mom!

ABOUT KATIE:
Katie has used the tool of meditation since she was 18 years old. First, as it was introduced to her during the last few minutes of yoga classes. Then at multiple Buddhist centers during regular meditation classes. Later in intimate group meditations. And eventually, through miraculous technologies like podcasts and apps that provided guided meditations, she could use during the darkest and lightest seasons of her life.
Katie is a woman who is deeply interested in continually evolving herself, in becoming more mindful, trying to live the most vibrant life she can possibly live. She’s a mom, a wife, a daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She has been a podcaster since 2014 and has had the privilege of supporting women in business under her Biz Women Rock banner. She’s an athlete, a vegan, an adventurer, a recovering perfectionist and a gladiator. She doubts herself, has struggled with loving her body, has felt the pangs of comparing myself to others, let fear keep me from doing things she really wanted to do and has carried way too many things on her shoulders. She is perfectly imperfect and always searching to understand herself better.
