On this Q&A style episode of the podcast, I answer a few of the questions that I've received throughout this season from listeners, fellow yoga teachers + 1-on-1 clients. This is short episode featuring 5 of the questions I get asked the most and that I think are the most important to address as a yoga teacher, particularly as a new yoga teacher.

We cover teaching for free and how you know when you should stop teaching for free, how to determine your maximum capacity for teaching each day + week, how to prevent burnout, when you can consider yourself a "real yoga teacher", and how you will know when you're ready to teach.

I pull from guests advice from the show, my own personal experience and my knowledge of the yoga industry to answer these questions.

Chanelle Neilson is a mother of 5 and a part-time yoga teacher based out of southern California. Chanelle's priority has always been her family and being a mom, but she's found a way to set her own schedule and create a career around yoga that fits within her life as a mom.

There is no perfect job for a mom, so to have the perfect schedule, you have to create your own opportunities. This is always easier said than done, and on this episode, Chanelle shares what that process has been like for her, what she has learned along the way, and how she has allowed her passion for yoga to support her as a mom through teaching at a gym, running her own part-time studio, and teaching outdoor classes.

Jess Dohnt tried yoga for the first time over 10 years ago and didn't love it. If you had told her 10 years ago that she would be a yoga studio manager, owner + teacher, she wouldn't have believed you! After a bad injury, Jess discovered her love of yoga and hasn't looked back since.

On this episode, Jess shares her experience as a yoga teacher + yoga studio manager and what she learned through her years managing a successful studio, including hiring yoga teachers, scheduling classes, and creating a community. Six months ago, Jess took the leap into studio ownership with 2 other teachers, and she shares the ups and downs of owning a yoga studio and what she's learned over the last 6 months. We chat about burnout, wearing multiple hats, what it's like to own a small business, the lesson of asking for help, and so much more.

This week on the podcast, I'm chatting with the founder of American Power Yoga and Simplified Genetics, Kurt Johnsen. Kurt is based out of Dallas, and he shares the story of creating American Power Yoga over 15 years ago.

Kurt came to yoga from kung fu, and he took what he learned from his background in martial arts to create American Power Yoga. He didn't have a formal yoga teacher training and he hardly had any experience in the yoga industry, yet he was successfully able to create a studio that grew to be quite big.

On this episode, Kurt shares the process of creating, growing and selling American Power Yoga, what he learned through running American Power Yoga, and the biggest business lessons he's learned through his career. We also chat about his new company Simplified Genetics, including where the idea came from, what it was like to start the business, and how it's grown over the last 2 years.

Enjoy!
