Author Wendy Mayhew has been an entrepreneur for 40 years. Her most recent businesses are WISE - Seniors in Business and WISE 50 over 50 Awards.

WISE - Seniors in Business was formed to change how older entrepreneurs are perceived and to guide wannabe older entrepreneurs in deciding if entrepreneurship is for them. Wendy has quickly become Canada's leading expert on older entrepreneurship. She has done extensive research and understands the challenges facing this newest and fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs. Wendy is a sought after speaker and workshop facilitator by business organizations now starting to realize the importance of serving this newest group of entrepreneurs.

Seeing the gap of information available to older entrepreneurs, Wendy authored WISER: The Definitive Guide to Starting a Business After the Age of 50 to assist this group of new entrepreneurs in starting their businesses.

Wendy also offers assistance and guidance for business organizations who are setting up programs specific to new entrepreneurs starting a business later in life.

The WISE 50 over 50 Awards recognize and celebrate Canadian entrepreneurs over the age of 50. With the support of well over 100 Canadian organizations sharing information on the awards through their networks, the 50 over 50 Awards have generated awareness on the most under-supported and underserved group of new entrepreneurs in Canada.

Description:

This is a 4-episode series where the first 2 episodes comprise the first feedback session. The next 2 episodes are the 2nd and 3rd feedback sessions. I do not record the 4th feedback session as it is a review and usually gets too personal for this podcast.

This week is the 4th episode of the Career Pivot evaluation series called "Can Phil Repurpose His Career?" This will be the fourth individual I have done this with.

Previously, I worked with Tim, Sarah, and Juan which are not their real names. This time it is Phil. Phil is in his early 60s, spent 20 years in the military, and spent the last 10 or so years in the private sector.

If you have not listened to the first three episodes in the series, I suggest you stop and go back and listen to episode 165, 166, and 169. In this episode, I take Phil through his Birkman Stress report where we will discuss Phil’s needs in 3 different areas and things he can do to stay out of stress.

You can download the reports here.

If this process interests you, I am offering a 30% discount if you tell me you listened to this podcast.

This is a month-long process and you will be required to do a fair amount of introspection, but most people who have gone through this process have gained a great deal of insight into themselves. More importantly, they have learned how they changed their behaviors to fit in with work or society.

I know that personally, I learned that I twisted myself into a pretzel to make myself successful. Unfortunately, when I hit my 50s, it became exhausting.

Again, if you are interested, just email me at podcast@careerpivot.com. Before listening to this episode, I recommend you download the reports from careerpivot.com/phil.

I will give you the links below to all of the resources I have found. I have said before this pandemic is exposing vulnerabilities in industries, supply chains, government institutions, our health care system, and careers. There is not much not being touched by this pandemic.

Please feel free to reach out to me either in the comments in the show notes below or email me at podcast@careerpivot.com to let me know if you found this useful. This is evolving so fast and I am having difficultly digesting the trends I am seeing.

Description:

We are all dealing with a lot of uncertainty these days.  I discovered Eliz Green on my friend Thom Singer's podcast episode Uncertainty, Overwhelm, and Stress for Business Leaders.

Eliz is the author of Stress-Proof Your Heart and you can learn more about Eliz on her about page.

Eliz's introduction is as follows:

Do you worry about the toll all of the uncertainty and stress is taking on your health, quality of life…and maybe even your sanity?

Eliz Greene has a thing or two to say about stress.

She is a professional speaker, a small business owner, and a mother of 19-year-old twins.

She received volumes of unvarnished truth from employees and leaders all over the world as part of her research on job stress. Working with a wide range of organizations, from NASA to Forward Financial to Colgate-Palmolive…and smaller organizations as well, she’s seen how high-performance, purpose-driven leaders create teams immune to overwhelm and uncertainty while protecting their own productivity and quality of life.

She is on a mission to help busy people deal with the stress caused by uncertainty and overwhelm so they can feel better, protect their health, and get more of the important stuff done…

…and don’t we all want that?

Description:

Gary is a recruiting and hiring consultant. He has trained and led high-performance recruiting teams that have made well over 10,000 hires. He has seen the inside story of how recruiting and hiring happens inside over 300 companies from Fortune 100 companies to boutique start-ups.

Gary’s industry background includes software, IT, eCommerce, banking, public sector, semiconductor, engineering, manufacturing, sales, marketing, and environmental companies. His experience spans all levels including C-level executives, senior management, technical leadership, and high-performance professionals as well as support staff and laborers.

Gary was originally on the podcast in episode 58. You can listen to it here.

Gary has been involved in HireFactors for about 2 years.

Many people have varied and eclectic stories. What Gary has found is that their resume and career stories look and sound like their career  -scattered and varied.

The hiring manager is looking for someone who has been doing similar kinds of things to the job description and is moving right along in their career with increasing levels of responsibility, because that is the easy hire. If they cannot make sense of your career trajectory then you will not get hired. You need to make your resume and career story portray a clear message.

A software company was looking for a software tester related to dispensing pharmaceuticals. This is highly regulated and they needed someone to test the user interface, which is very routine and monotonous. Gary found someone who had been working in manufacturing - specifically testing related to fighter aircraft. This was testing torque on bolts and welds. He had to do this day in and day out and fill out very complex forms. The hiring manager immediately kicked the resume back.

Gary explained that this person had been performing similar tasks as the position they wanted to fill, had tremendous attention to detail and would not get burned out. If this person had applied directly to this position with no one who was able to translate their skills, there is no way this person would have even gotten an interview.

This will be a 4-episode series where the first 2 episodes are comprised of the first feedback session. The next 2 episodes are the 2nd and 3rd feedback sessions. I do not record the 4th feedback session as it is a review and usually gets too personal for this podcast. This is the 2nd half of the first feedback session.

You will discover that Phil has a big gap in usual versus needs scores in the area of insistence. He is very structured, but he is also a big-time problem solver. From his behavior, you would never know he is a problem solver. I call this being a structured anarchist. He loves rules as long as they are his rules. He also has an interesting combination of being a problem solver and being a sensitive guy. In the engineering world, this is very uncommon and we will see later on that this is a superpower.

This week I start the next Career Pivot evaluation series called "Can Phil Repurpose His Career?". This will be the fourth individual I have done this with. Previously, I worked with Tim, Sarah, and Juan (not their real names). This time it is Phil, a gentleman in his early 60s, who spent 20 years in the military and then the last 10 or so years in the private sector. What you will hear is the military was a good fit for Phil and served him well. Since leaving the military, work has been a mixed bag. As he looks to move on to an encore career he wants to learn more about himself so he makes a good choice.

Most of these episodes are all in the top 10% of downloaded episodes for this podcast. This will be a 4-episode series where the first 2 episodes comprise the first feedback session. The next 2 episodes are the 2nd and 3rd feedback sessions. I do not record the 4th feedback session as it is a review and usually gets too personal for this podcast.

Podcast #162 - Marc Interviews Joanne Webb, Author of Desire the Skies - The First Book Every Aspiring Flight Attendant Needs to Read

Description:

Joanne Webb has been a flight attendant for nineteen years. As she pursued this career path, she also took some miss-steps along the way.  She applied to become a flight attendant a few different times after graduating from college.  She was rejected, and based on that feeling, stopped pursuing the one career that truly made her feel excited.

In the summer of 2000, Joanne wandered into a hat store in New York City after calling on a client.  The woman working there, Tricia, was about fifty at the time.  She mentioned she was going to Paris that night and that she was a flight attendant for Continental Airlines, which is now part of United Airlines.  Joanne told her she had applied three years before and they didn't want her.  Tricia assured her that was not necessarily true - she just needed some coaching. Joanne reapplied at Continental and is now a nineteen-year flight attendant at United (United and Continental merged).

Joanne also spent two years volunteering with immigrants in Denver with employment services.  In doing this, she learned about resumes and interviews, as well as about the general workplace from a different angle. Joanne has taken knowledge from the airline industry and from employment counseling and has created two online courses, does private interview coaching, and has written a book called Desire the Skies: The First Book Every Aspiring Flight Attendant Needs to Read.  Many of her clients are doing a Career Pivot.

I recorded many episodes in December with more planned for early January including interview of the owner of the website housesitmexico.com, Brenda Bernstein author of the best selling LinkedIn book How to Write a Killer LinkedIn Profile, another can Phil repurpose his career series, I am sure I will call him Phil, Danielle Kunkle Roberts from Boomer Benefits to explain Medicare at 50, not Medicare for All but Medicare at 50 and much more. My plan was to publish only 2 episodes in January but if all goes well I will be back to a weekly publication schedule this month. Therefore, next week will be an encore episode with the most popular episode in the last 2 years, which was episode 78 when I interviewed Jonathan Rauch, author of The Happiness Curve: Why Life Gets Better After 50. This episode has been downloaded close to 2500 times since it’s release in May of 2018 and continues to get 15-30 downloads per month. It is a fascinating interview.
