Description:

This will be the last episode of 2021 as I will be taking a break during the holiday season. The podcast will return on January 3rd of 2022 with a 2022 reality check discussion with John Tarnoff.

I also wanted to take a moment to reflect on 250 episodes of this podcast. I never thought when I got started that I would be producing a podcast episode just about every week for over 5 years. It is one of the top-ranked career podcasts and I hope I can continue to meet your expectations in 2022.

This week I am speaking with Bonnie Marcus, author of Not Done Yet!: How Women Over 50 Regain Their Confidence and Claim Workplace Power.

Here is a bit from her Amazon author page:

Award winning entrepreneur, Forbes contributing writer, and executive coach, Bonnie Marcus, M.Ed., assists professional women to successfully navigate the workplace and position and promote themselves to advance their careers.

With 20+ years of sales and management experience, Bonnie’s extensive business background includes CEO of a ServiceMaster company and VP of Sales at Medical Staffing Network and two other national companies in the healthcare and software industries. She has held executive positions in startup companies and Fortune 500 companies.

Bonnie started her corporate career at an entry-level position and worked her way up to the top of a national company. Her passion is now to help other women embrace their talent and ambition and step into their full potential and workplace power. Bonnie shares her message globally through speaking engagements, live and virtual workshops, blogging, and her popular podcast, Badass Women at Any Age.

Description:

This week is a different kind of episode. I brought Barry Silverberg, Director of Non-profit Studies at Austin Community College into the Career Pivot community to discuss the for-profit to non-profit transition. I have known Barry for many years, and I like to say he is the godfather of the non-profit community in Texas. I sought out Barry’s advice several times during my career.

I am using the audio from the meeting in this episode. We hold these types of meetings every couple of weeks and we record them. In this episode, you will hear Barry and I discuss the transition and then he takes questions from the members.

Because of this podcast, I am able to get people to come to speak, offer their knowledge and advice with the Career Pivot community. As I have said before this podcast is my greatest networking tool.

It is because of his book that I am speaking with Andy. We met when we both were speakers for a career summit a few months back. Andy gave me a copy of his book Own Your Career Own Your Life and it really resonated with me.

This week I am speaking with three career professionals who I highly respect.

These three women have teamed up to create a career resource marketplace called Jobsearchjourney.com. This is a marketplace where you can get affordable, high-quality job search products produced by some of the best people in the career industry.

The prices range from just a few dollars to a couple of hundred dollars. I like what they are doing AND they are first time eCommerce entrepreneurs. I wanted to tell you about the website and its journey.

This week I am speaking with my dear friend and colleague Susan Lahey. Susan is a freelance writer who has worked with me on all three of the Repurpose Your Career books. I had Susan originally on the podcast in episode 54 and then did an encore episode with an update in episode 122. Susan took you on her journey on how she went from a journalist to being a freelance writer. This is a much more difficult transition than you might think.

In 2019, Susan decided to move her freelance writing business to Port Portugal after all three of her children had graduated from college. I wanted Susan to take you on her journey of both becoming an expat and setting up her business in Europe.

I want you to hear his story because he saw ageism occurring when he himself was still young. He cultivated this business on the side for decades.

You will hear that he has a real passion for this area and he can continue to do this for as long as he likes. I specifically want some of my younger listeners to take note of this episode.

I interviewed Queen in episode 119 in March of 2019 after she published her book Considerations: A Guide For Moving Abroad. I am bringing back her back as she has several more entrepreneurial endeavors to tell you about.

During our interview her dog Quincy interrupted us, and I left that in the episode as he is a big part of Queen’s life.

Description:

This week I am speaking with my wife Lotus. It has been a while since I recorded an expat episode and I thought that you would enjoy her perspective.

We have been living in Ajijic Mexico for 3 years. We just sold our condo in Austin Texas and by the time this episode is published I hope we have a contract accepted on a house in Ajijic.

I want you to hear her perspective because before moving to Mexico, she had never lived or worked outside of Texas. I on the other hand grew up in New Jersey, went to college in Chicago, and worked for 40 years in Austin, Texas. During that time, I worked in close to 40 different countries. All of the teaching I did around the world left me very culturally adept. My wife did not have that experience.

You will hear that my wife is extremely happy here and if would have told me that 5 years ago, I probably would not have been skeptical at best.

Now rather than a word from our sponsor, I have an announcement and an ask for you.

Starting in November of 2021, I will be scaling back some of the content creation for the Career Pivot blog and this podcast.

I want and NEED your input. I have created a survey that covers both the blog and this podcast. Please take a moment to stop now and go to CareerPivot.com/survey2021 or click here.

Description:

This week I am speaking with Janine Vanderburg who wears multiple hats today. I am speaking with her in this episode about her leadership role in the Encore network.

Let me read some of her bio:

An encore champion and longtime community activist, Janine Vanderburg is in her encore career leading Changing the Narrative in Colorado, a campaign started in 2018 to change the way people think, talk and act about aging and ageism.

In 2019, Janine created the Age-Friendly Workplace Initiative, to “reframe” older workers to business leaders and to make businesses more aware of the benefits of intergenerational workplaces, and On the Same Page, a campaign to encourage intergenerational conversations about ageism. This year, Janine partnered with the local PBS station to produce and broadcast a series of intergenerational conversations about critical topics, including the role of the arts in advancing social justice, digital divides during Covid-19, health equity, and ageism.

Janine served two terms on the Denver Commission on Aging, where she facilitated a strategic planning process to help Denver become an age-friendly community and initiated the Commission’s social media presence to challenge the stereotype that older adults are digitally incompetent. In 2018, she earned the Mayor’s Diversity and Inclusion award for her advocacy for older adults.

Committed to leveraging the talents of people of all ages to benefit the community, Janine currently chairs the Encore Network Leadership Council. Her favorite saying: “We are the leaders we are looking for.”

He is also an economics commentator for Minnesota Public Radio and host of its series Conversations on the Creative Economy as well as a columnist for PBS Next Avenue and the Star Tribune. Description:

This week I am speaking with Elizabeth Sumner Wafler. Elizabeth is a former school teacher, an aspiring women’s fiction author, and an editorial and writing coach.

Let me read you a snippet from her website:

As an evocative writer, I bring strong images, memories, or feelings to mind. You will find my work filled with vivid metaphors, unique prose, and detailed descriptions that make you feel part of the scene. And alliteration. I go gaga over glorious alliteration. That's the kind of book I enjoy reading myself. My stories will always involve friendship and a love interest for my main character. You'll find swoon-worthy love scenes, but the sex will be "behind closed doors." You will find conflict at every turn, tension on most pages, and "cliffhangery" scene and chapter enders. I hope my overall style pleases and resonates with you and further deepens your reading experience.

I enjoy working with other writers through my freelance editorial business Four Eyes Editorial. I live with my husband and cairn terrier in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where I can be found reading on my screened porch, at a yoga class, at a farmer’s market in search of the perfect heirloom tomato, or at one of the area’s vineyards, enjoying a glass of Virginia wine.

Description:

This week I am speaking with my good friend John Tarnoff. I have had John on the podcast in episodes 208, 152, and 120. John has been the most frequent guest on the podcast in the 4 and 1/2 years I have been producing this podcast.

I consider John Tarnoff to be a peer, colleague, and friend. John specializes in helping those in the 2nd half of life reinvent themselves. In 2017, he published his book, Boomer Reinvention: How to Create Your Dream Career. Here is a snippet from his website:

After my startup went bust, I decided to go back to school to earn a Master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology – a branch of behavioral psychology that focuses on self-responsibility and self-forgiveness as pathways to healing and change. I didn’t think that I wanted to become a psychologist but I hoped to learn more about myself, what my strengths and weaknesses were, and what lessons I needed to learn to move forward.

Now, fifteen years later, as a career coach, author, and speaker, my mission is to support professionals over fifty to redefine, build and sustain second-act careers beyond traditional retirement. I’ve created a more personal-growth approach to career development, vs the traditional HR skills-based paradigm – starting with the notion that your ideal second-act career is already inside you.

John recently wrote a blog post that really impressed me called, Adopt a Career Growth Mindset and Never Think of Yourself as “Unemployed”.

In this episode, we will be discussing the content of that post.

I have had both Ryan and Andy on the podcast previously. Ryan in episode 42 and Andy in episode 191.

Description:

This week I am speaking with Tami Forman Executive of Path Forward.

Path Forward is a nonprofit organization on a mission to empower people to restart their careers after time spent focused on caregiving. We fulfill this mission by working with companies to create and run mid-career internships — also known as “returnships” — that give professionals a jump start back to their careers while giving companies access to a diverse, untapped talent force.

I had Tami on the podcast way back in 2019 in episode #128. I wanted to bring Tami back to discuss how the Pandemic has affected their mission. Given that they primarily focus on caregivers who are mostly women and this recession has been called the "She-cession", I thought it would be appropriate to get her perspective on the recovery from the pandemic.

I was introduced to Matt by Tami Foreman, executive director of Path Forward, who was on the podcast in episode #128. Matt is the board chair for Path Forward.

I interviewed Mike Harris from Patina Solutions back in episode #221. Patina Solutions is similar but different from Bolster in supplying fractional and interim executive talent to their clients. I suggest you listen to both Matt and Mike to see if these platforms are a good fit for your situation.

This week I am speaking with Keith Stolzenbach, who I was introduced to by my friends at EnCorps STEM Teachers Program. Keith spent much of his career as a professor at MIT and UCLA. When he decided to retire in his late 60s he decided to become a high school science teacher. With the help from the EnCorps program, he is now a chemistry teacher at what is referred to as a Title 1 high school. Title 1 schools get extra assistance from the state and federal government as the majority of the students qualify for financial assistance. When I taught high school math, I taught in a Title 1 school which meant that most of my students qualified for free or reduced-price meals.

I want you to hear Keith’s story, which I found quite inspiring.

Description:

I just returned from a 4 week trip to Austin Texas where my wife and I were vaccinated, I renewed my Texas driver's license and took care of a lot of other business.

I put out the word that I was interested in having meetings with anyone who wanted to chat with me while I was in Austin to my email list and to my personal Facebook page. I had 26 people take me up on the offer over a 4 week period.

What I found was based on their age, relationship status, health, and their employment status how they dealt with the pandemic, and more importantly, how they were emerging from the pandemic varied widely. I want to take you through my discussions and what I learned about them and myself.
