Description:

This week will be a different kind of episode. My wife and I arrived back in Austin a little less than a week ago. We have a lot of things to do while we are here to get properly vaccinated. You should read my blog post from last week where I compared the COVID-19 response in Mexico and the US.

We will be in Austin for a month to get both vaccination shots of the Pfizer vaccine. This is the longest we have been in the US in 2 and half years. I claim you learn more about your own culture when you go someplace else.

That is so true returning to my home town of 40 + years and finding it is not the same place anymore. Some of this is due to the pandemic and changes in people’s behaviors. Some of this is due to a huge influx of people moving to the city. Some of this is I can view the city from a different perspective. I am not the same person who left Austin in June of 2018 and can look at it in a different light.

This week I am speaking with Mike Harris CEO of Patina Solutions and Patina Nation. I was introduced to Patina several years ago as Patina Solutions provides fractional and interim leadership opportunities for the members of the Patina Nation community. Patina Nation is primarily made of executives and managers who have 25 or more years of experience and are looking for gig work.

Below is Mike's bio:

A proven and prolific entrepreneur, Mike has significant experience in starting and building professional and technical services firms. Patina Solutions is his sixth professional services start-up. He also saw that professionals with 25 years or more of experience were looking to work differently and he wanted to harness the power of these experts to fill client’s impending resource and skill gaps for projects and interim leadership roles.

Thom has authored twelve books on the power of business relationships, sales, networking, presentation skills, and entrepreneurship, and regularly speaks to corporate, law firm, and convention audiences. He sets the tone for better engagement at industry events as the opening keynote speaker or the Master of Ceremonies. The unique Conference Catalyst Program has become a “meeting planner's” favorite in how it transforms the conference attendee experience.

As the host of the popular “Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do” podcast, Thom interviews business leaders, entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and others who possess an extra dose of the entrepreneurial spirit. The information compiled from these compelling interviews is shared with his clients, as he challenges people to be more engaged and enthusiastic in all their actions.

Thom earned the prestigious Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation in 2014. The Certified Speaking Professional designation, established in 1980, is the speaking industry’s international measure of professional platform skill. The CSP designation is conferred by the National Speakers Association (NSA) only on those speakers who have earned it by meeting strict qualifying criteria. The letters CSP following a speaker’s name identify that speaker as a speaking professional with a proven track record for understanding and delivering value from the platform.

In early March of 2020, Thom saw all of his business disappear.

Russ Eanes enjoyed a long career as a publishing executive for the Mennonite church in the U.S. and Canada. With the disruption of the publishing industry and the decline in church membership and attendance, Russ found himself downsizing staff and merging locations until he was exhausted by it, so he downsized himself and took a sabbatical, including a walk on the Camino de Santiago. On that sabbatical, he found a new purpose. He is now publishing the story of his walk and starting a journey of teaching other walkers how to self-publish books chronicling their experiences. The original interview was published in August of 2019 and Marc interviewed Russ again in January of 2021.

This week I have a great discussion with Glenn Zweig. Glenn provides executive search and leadership advisory services in Egon Zehnder’s Digital, Tech-Enabled Services, and Healthcare practices. He is also the host of the podcast called, The Art of Excellence, where he interviews high-achieving people across all walks of life to find common threads of success.

I wanted Glenn on the show for 2 reasons. The first reason is that he has a deep understanding of the executive search process and I wanted his perspective on what is he looking for when candidates are switching industries. The second reason is he has a great podcast, The Art of Excellence, that is completely separate from what he does as an executive recruiter. Glenn suggests that you need to put yourself out there when pivoting industries and I want you to hear a bit of Glenn’s podcasting story.

Description:

I consider John Tarnoff to be a peer, colleague, and friend. John specializes in helping those in the 2nd half of life reinvent themselves. In 2017, he published his book, Boomer Reinvention: How to Create Your Dream Career.

Let me read you a snippet from his website.

After my startup went bust, I decided to go back to school to earn a Master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology – a branch of behavioral psychology that focuses on self-responsibility and self-forgiveness as pathways to healing and change. I didn't think that I wanted to become a psychologist but I hoped to learn more about myself, what my strengths and weaknesses were, and what lessons I needed to learn to move forward.

Now, fifteen years later, as a career coach, author, and speaker, my mission is to support professionals over fifty to redefine, build and sustain second-act careers beyond traditional retirement. I’ve created a more personal-growth approach to career development, vs the traditional HR skills-based paradigm - starting with the notion that your ideal second-act career is already inside you.

John and I had a frank discussion on what is going on in the job market for the older worker and what we need to do to get through this. We have done this before and we will yet do it again.

Description:

This week, I have a great interview with Sarah Harford. Sarah is a member of the Career Pivot membership community and was recently hired as a virtual patient trainer for a medical device company. By the way, this is a position in a job that didn't exist before COVID.

She had been employed as an occupational therapist in a psychiatric hospital that left her stressed out and really needed a change. I want you to hear her story about her very convoluted journey during the time of COVID. She had lots of opportunities to just give up and stay as an occupational therapist, but she didn't.

In the end, a bit of serendipity happened. More importantly, she was open to it. She landed a position that did not exist before the pandemic and it married multiple skills from being an occupational therapist and from her previous career as a massage therapist. It's a great story I want you to hear and hopefully be inspired by.
