What are the keys to long-life learning?

There’s a difference between being a life-long learner and long-life learner. How you learn at thirty years old is different from how you learn at sixty years old. As you age, your brain changes, which then transforms how you look at certain topics, what you want to learn about, and why you want to learn about them.

To go deeper into this topic, I’m thrilled to have Chip Conley as our special guest today. Chip is the founder and CEO of Modern Elder Academy, which focuses on the value of intergenerational collaboration in companies. His latest book, Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder, encourages people to rethink the value of having five generations contributing to the workspace.

Long-life learning is the idea your thoughts are part of a holistic, systemic process that adapts as you age. Your focus and interests shift into seeking deeper meaning in the topics and subjects you study. Society tends to focus on how long you live. Listen in, as Chip explains why he believes the focus should be on depth and how you can become a long-life learner.

What is a genius network and how do you build one?

You’ve probably heard me say who you spend time with is who you become. That’s because your brain power doesn’t rely solely on your neurological networks, it’s influenced and shaped by your social network. Who you surround yourself with can have a direct impact on your capabilities and success.

I’m excited to go deeper into this topic with our guest today, Joe Polish. Joe is the founder of Genius Network, one of the highest-level groups for entrepreneurs in the world. He’s host of multiple top-ranked podcasts, and author of several books, including his latest, What’s in It for Them?: 9 Genius Networking Principles to Get What You Want by Helping Others Get What They Want.

When you connect people and ideas, you can change lives. But you don’t want to build just any network of people—you want a genius network. Listen in, as Joe goes into detail on why he created his Genius Network, what it involves, and gives you strategies and action steps for building your own genius network today.

How do you take effective notes so that you can remember more?

As technology progresses, there are more notetaking options than ever before. While studies consistently show handwritten notes have better retention and comprehension than any other method, we still get asked frequently what the best whole brain method for taking notes is.

Today, I’m going to take some of these questions from the Kwik Brain Universe on notetaking and do a modified Q&A to go into more specific detail on my favorite methods.

The more information you can remember, the more likely you can utilize those learnings in your daily life. Listen in, as I review several ways to level up your notetaking skills to help you learn faster and remember more.

How do you make the placebo effect work for you?

We talk a lot about the power of mindset. Before you can achieve any goal, you have to believe it’s possible and change your inner self-talk to support that belief. There’s powerful science that shows that the way you choose to see the world can physically affect your mind and your body, but you can even change your business, your brand, and beyond.

I’m excited to have this conversation today with our guest Erik Vance. Erik is a science journalist and an editor with The New York Times Well desk. He’s also the author of the book, Suggestible You: The Curious Science of Your Brain’s Ability to Deceive, Transform, and Heal.

Research into the power of suggestibility shows that your brain relies on analyzing the past to make predictions about the future. And it takes a lot of shortcuts based on what it expects the outcome to be. Listen in, as Erik talks about how you can use the power of these expectations and beliefs to achieve extraordinary results in any area of your life.

Can physical exercise boost your brain power and focus?

You’ve heard me say, as your body moves, the brain grooves. That’s because the primary reason you have a brain is to control the movement in your body. And as you move, your brain creates brain-derived neurotropic factors, which is like fertilizer for the brain.

Today, I want to welcome you to do this Kwik challenge with me. I believe that when you challenge yourself in one area, you learn how to challenge yourself in other areas of your life. That’s how you build strength and mental resilience.

You can make real change in your life simply by challenging yourself to do brand new things. It adds novelty to your life, which creates new brain connections and stimulates neural growth. Listen in, as I talk about some physical exercises you can do to boost your brain power and level up your focus.

What role does your microbiome take in shaping your moods, memory, and even your dreams?

You already know that what you eat matters, especially for your brain matter. The mind-gut connection is so strong, I’ve often referred to it as your second brain. But this interconnectedness extends throughout your entire body and can directly impact your immune system.

To have this very important conversation, I’m excited to have Dr. Jeffrey Bland on our show today. Dr. Bland is the founder of Big Bold Health—a company on a mission to transform how people think about the human immune system. He’s also the author of The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, and Happier Life.

Your body creates 80,000 new immune cells every second. By improving your microbiome, these new cells can cleanse damaged immune cells associated with inflammation leading to improved health, brain function, and sleep. Listen in, as Dr. Bland give you practical tips on how you can make small changes to improve your microbiome for a healthier body and mind.

How do you unlimit your fear?

Fear is hardwired into your brain, and it isn’t always a bad thing. It’s meant to keep you safe, but in our modern world, stress is often misidentified in the brain as fear. This can trigger your fight, flight, or freeze response, and that can hurt your productivity, hinder your performance, and take away your peace of mind.

In today’s episode, I want to talk about fear through the lens of the Limitless model. Using Mindset, Motivation, and Methods as a framework can not only help you achieve your goals, but it can help you identify what’s holding you back.

No one is immune to feeling scared, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re afraid of heights or public speaking—both are very real in that moment. Fear can limit what you do, but like all limited beliefs, it’s learned. If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or uncertain and aren’t sure how to face the fear holding you back, this episode is for you.

What is your ‘wouldn’t go back moment’, and how do you reach it?

Change is not optional. It happens whether you want it to or not. But the good news is your brain is meant to change, which means your life is meant to change. Without realizing it, you’ve likely had a moment after difficulty where you realized that what you experienced gave you a new skill, perspective, or mentality that you wouldn’t give up.

To have this transformative conversation with you, I’m thrilled to have Jason Feifer on our show today. He’s the editor in chief of Entrepreneur Magazine and author of the brand-new book, Build for Tomorrow: An Action Plan for Embracing Change, Adapting Fast, and Future-Proofing Your Career.

Change can be difficult. Even though some people might seem to adapt more easily than others, the four phases of change are the same for everyone. And they always end with a ‘wouldn’t go back moment.’ Listen in, as Jason talks about why belief in this moment drives success and can help you identify opportunities for your future.

How do you use light to enhance your memory?

As the world becomes increasingly digital, you’re likely spending more time indoors with artificial light. Blue light from screens can interrupt your sleep, focus, and concentration. But can some types of light actually make you stronger or smarter?

To go in-depth on this topic, I’m thrilled to welcome Dr. Shelley James on our show today. She’s an international expert on light and well-being, as well as a trained glass artist and electrician. Her TEDx talk, How Can Space Station Lighting Help Us Here on Earth?, was one of the top three most-watched talks the month it was released.

In the same way that sunlight directly affects your biochemistry, artificial light can influence how your body and your brain perform. By understanding how to use light effectively, you can harness some incredibly powerful health benefits. Listen in, as Dr. James talks about how she used light to heal from a traumatic brain injury and how you can use it for greater wellness and mental acuity.

What is the key to lasting motivation?

Motivation is a topic that comes up a lot in our community. You want to eat right, read more, exercise daily, and meditate regularly. But talking about making a change is often easier than achieving long-term follow-through.

I’m excited to have Dr. Michelle Segar on our show today to talk more about this topic. She’s an award-winning motivation scientist and researcher at the University of Michigan. She’s the author of No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness and she’s here to talk about her new book, Joy Choice: How to Finally Achieve Lasting Changes in Eating and Exercise.

There’s a difference between reaching a goal and sustaining that behavior over time, and many of the paradigms and beliefs you might hold around habits are likely outdated or oversimplified. Listen in, as Dr. Segar dispels the many myths around habits and talks about her model for creating lasting change and sustained motivation.

Questions are the answer. If you’ve been in our community for a while, you’ve probably heard me say that. Once you start asking more questions, you start finding more answers. And even listening to what others are asking can prompt you down your own path of self-discovery.

In today’s episode, I’m going to do a rapid-fire Q&A. Every month, our team goes through questions from our Kwik Brain community and we’ve compiled a list of topics all of you have asked about the most.

Knowledge alone isn’t power—it’s the potential for power. First, you need to take action. And often, the key to unlocking action is by asking questions. Listen in, as Jim speed reads through your burning questions and answers as many as possible.

How do you memorize jokes?

Tell me if this sounds familiar. You hear a fantastic joke, but when the time comes to repeat it, your mind goes blank. This doesn’t seem to happen with song lyrics or movie quotes, so why do jokes feel like they disappear moments after you hear them?

I work with stand-up comedians to help them memorize their sets by teaching them the methods we teach in our online memory course, and today, I’m going to give you four Kwik Tips to help you remember jokes.

When it comes to telling a good joke, it’s frustrating to miss the punchline or forget a detail that makes the whole thing falls flat. Listen in, as I go over the 4 C’s to ensure you recall every laugh-out-loud joke with ease.

One of the things our community talks about the most, is how to apply our methods in a wide variety of applications. Every day, the Kwik Brain team reads joy stories from students, clients, readers, and listeners telling us about the tactics and strategies that work best both personally and professionally.

Do you find yourself multitasking more but getting less done?

Take a moment and pay attention to what you’re doing right now. Do you have Slack open while you’re composing an email? Are you scrolling through social media while you’re listening to this episode? One of the most frequent questions I get asked is how do I maintain my focus in a world full of distractions.

In today’s episode, I’m going to share a few Kwik Tips on how you can harness your focus and sharpen your ability to concentrate on one thing at a time.

Many people feel a constant pressure to get more done in less time. But research shows that multitasking doesn’t result in more productivity, and it can actually cost you time and money instead. How do you become a master of your own behaviors and habits?

All habits begin with small, simple steps. That’s why I break down my morning routine into bite-sized actions and periodically turn them into easy challenges for you to do every day. One tiny action can compound into big change.

This week’s Kwik Challenge is to stay hydrated. You can lose up to a pound of water while you sleep, which means you’re likely dehydrated when you wake up. Drinking water is vital for brain and body health—especially as we head into peak summer heat.

Change doesn’t have to be difficult. I often talk about how the treasures of your life are hidden in your daily routine, and you can uncover them by making small adjustments to your behaviors. Listen in, as I go over the six benefits for staying hydrated and give you some Kwik tips on how to incorporate more water into your daily routine.

How do you remember your seed phrase for your crypto wallet—or any password—easily and effortlessly?

Have you ever come up with a password, PIN number, or code only to forget it when you need it most? Or maybe you haven’t forgotten it, but you worry that you will. We live in a technological world, where online security is vital in ensuring your personal, professional, and financial information stays safe.

Today, I want to walk you through a memory exercise to help you remember lists in sequential order. When it comes to certain things—like your crypto seed phrase—the specific order is key. This method is designed to help you learn any series of words, events, places, and more.

How do you begin your day to jumpstart your brain for greater productivity and peace of mind?

One of the most consistent questions I get from our community is how I start my day. I believe that if you can win the morning, you can win the day. And it all starts by establishing a set of routines and habits that create positive momentum to move you forward.

In today’s episode, I’m going to walk you through some of the habits I’ve created that make up my ideal morning. Notice how I said ideal. My goal is to do as many things as possible, but keep in mind that every morning is different. The important thing is to start the day with self-love and self-care, so remember to be kind to yourself as you work towards change.

Creating a morning routine takes advantage of the science of momentum, which helps you avoid decision fatigue. Instead of having to make constant choices, you let your routine generate energy to carry you through your day. If you want to learn how to begin each morning with clarity, vision, and direction, this episode is for you.
