Rock & Roll Farming

Jan 31, 2018

Tonight I'm heading down to Hertfordshire, in the South East of England to talk to farmer and National Farmers Union election candidate, Stuart Roberts @HertsFarmer

We start off by talking about a fantastic story associated with his family's farm, that involved the previous owner and a game of high stakes poker, which is the reason why, to this day, a separately owned golf course runs through the middle of their land!

We discuss the different enterprises on the farm, and how they sell all the grain in 25kg bags to artisan flour mills and bakers the length and breadth of Britain, including one that overlooks Brixton Prison, and another that's been milling for a 1000 years.

We go into the various jobs and roles that Stuart's held, including working in the civil service at MAFF, being the Chief Executive at the British Meat Processors Association, and being the Agricultural Director at ABP, and what he's learned and experienced along the way.

We then talk about the NFU- National Farmers Union - and how he's standing for both deputy and vice Chairman at next month's elections, and what he hopes to bring to the role. We discuss the various issues facing the industry at the moment, and what we need to do to move forward.

I also couldn't not ask Stuart about the incredible story of how he lost 11 stone in weight eating ham and eggs (?!), and how he completed the London Marathon as part of this, raising £ for Farm Africa.

Stuart's a lovely fella, who's incredibly passionate about British Agriculture, and it was a pleasure to talk to him tonight. Check it out folks..
